"Portuguese knitting" refers to the technique of knitting with the yarn tensioned behind the neck or a knitting pin and throwing the yarn with the left thumb. This technique is preferred by the vast majority of knitters in Portugal and it is also known in some rural areas of Spain and the Mediterranean. Portuguese knitting is also common in latin America, where knitting was first introduced by the Portuguese and Spanish conquistadores.
