Block Printing on fabric with Atelier Karaka - 18 APR

Contents: This workshop is an introduction to block printing on fabric. It covers all steps of a block printing project, from the making of the block and carving of the engraving, to the creative possibilities that block printing offers:

• designing or adapting a design for a block;
• carving techniques for the block using a gouge;
• advantages and disadvantages of different engraving materials;
• how to select appropriate fabrics and inks for block printing;
• how to achieve different prints using the same block.

Requirements: participants must be over 14 years old. No previous knowledge is required. This workshop is taught in Portuguese, but the teacher can give instructions in English if necessary.

Materials: all essential materials are included in this workshop. At the end, each participant will keep the block they designed (which can be used in future projects) and their own printed fabric. 

Participants are not required to bring any materials, but we recommend that they bring an apron or an old t-shirt they don't mind getting dirty. Those who wish to bring a piece of clothing or their own fabric to block print instead may do so.

Withdrawals/refunds: the registration fee will be refunded to students who for some reason cannot participate in the workshop and communicate their withdrawal up to ten days before the workshop date.

Please note: The workshop will only take place if a minimum of four people sign up to participate. In the event that we don’t reach minimum attendance of four participants until five days before the date of the workshop, the workshop will be cancelled and any participants who had signed up will be contacted for a refund, rescheduling (if possible) or shop voucher to be arranged. In the event that the workshop is cancelled by the tutor due to unforeseen circumstances, we will apply the same procedure: refund of the fee, exchange for a shop voucher or, should another workshop date already be booked, a rescheduling of the workshop.
