Knitting with Purl Inlay Colorwork with Filipa Carneiro
Teacher: Filipa Carneiro (@filipa_nionoi)
Date: Saturday 21 September 2024 (10am-1pm)
Objectives: Would you like to add intricate colorwork and texture patterns to your knitting in a new and exciting way? This technique is just for you! Purl inlay colorwork technique creates unique designs that are sure to impress. Filipa Carneiro's adventure in this new technique started when she stumbled on an old machine-knitting book that featured some curious and interesting patterns. The designs of this "weaving" technique were something she never seen before in hand knitting, so she spent some time experimenting to recreate this machine knitting "weaving" technique by hand. The technique is similar to the inlay technique, but the yarn always stays on the right side of the fabric, never crossing to the wrong side. To achieve this, the contrast color yarn is secured on the right side of the fabric, creating an intricate pattern that looks like an embroidery stitch. Then you combine this with weaving principles to create beautiful motifs. In short, the colorwork patterns are worked by weaving the new color into the fabric using a purl stitch. Despite its intricate look, this technique is surprisingly simple to execute! With a little bit of practice, you'll be able to create stunning, one-of-a-kind designs that will impress everyone. And if you know how to purl on the Portuguese knitting style it gets even easier. This workshop is taught in Portuguese, but the teacher can give instructions in English and/or Spanish.
Contents:
- Introduction to purl inlay colorwork, how to secure the 2 colors;
- How to work the basic purl inlay stitch using the 2 colors;
- How to read the purl inlay colorwok charts;
- How to work purl inlay in the round;
- How to work purl inlay flat (in rows);
- All students receive the pattern for a cowl using this technique, to continue at home.
Materials to be brought by students: 1 skein of DK or Aran weight yarn + 1 skein of super Bulky weight yarn in contrasting colors; and recommended circular knitting needles for the DK or Aran yarn used. We suggest the following combos using our yarns: Beiroa + Brusca; Mondim + Vovó or João + Badana.
Requirements: participants must be over 14 years old. This is an intermediate level knitting workshop: students should know how to cast on, bind off, work basic stitch patterns (knit and purl), increases and decreases and knit in the round small circumferences (magic-loop or DPNs); it’s a plus if you know how to work stranded colorwok (jacquard).
Withdrawals/refunds: the registration fee will be refunded to students who for some reason cannot participate in the workshop and communicate their withdrawal up to ten days before the workshop date.
Location: Rua Maria Andrade, 50A (Lisbon)
Please note: The workshop will only take place if a minimum of three people sign up to participate. In the event that we don’t reach minimum attendance of three participants until five days before the date of the workshop, the workshop will be cancelled and any participants who had signed up will be contacted for a refund, rescheduling (if possible) or shop voucher to be arranged. In the event that the workshop is cancelled by the tutor due to unforeseen circumstances, we will apply the same procedure: refund of the fee, exchange for a shop voucher or, should another workshop date already be booked, a rescheduling of the workshop.
